Best John Mulaney Comedy Album Ever Aug 27, 2009
By Andrea L. Heyart After having watched Jonhn Mulaney on VH1 for a few years, I knew I liked the cut of his gib. When I saw his album available on Vine, I was totally stoked. After listening and laughing along with the album I'm happy to say that I wasn't dissappointed. Ironic, sardonic, and other "-ic"y adjectives easily describe his quick wit. It's easy to lump any comic under the age of 40 into the "alternative comedy" genre, though I can't say there is anything "alternative" about him. I've never been exactly sure what people really mean when they use the term alternative comedy. It seems to me that most of todays comics would fit into that category and therefore negate the name. But I digress.
Listen to the entire album, enjoy it and wait for the track labeled "Salt and Pepper Diner", trust me.

Great comedy, plus the greatest prank story ever! Aug 13, 2009
By Monty Moonlight When I selected this CD from Amazon Vine, I gotta admit, I didn't know who John Mulaney was. I just said, "Ooh, comedy CD!" Well, I finally got around to listening to the CD in question, and after just a few minutes, I recognized the routine from catching him on Comedy Central some time not so long ago. I remembered the jokes, because frankly, they were hilarious! As expected, John talks about personal history, experiences, and observations, and the subjects are all over the map, from drag queens to Law and Order, to Scarface and the Old Testament. A couple of the jokes are meant to be seen, unfortunately, like the great bit about the guy on Law and Order who won't stop unloading crates while being questioned by the cops (really funny when John acts it out), but this CD will have you laughing out loud pretty steadily regardless. John gives you a real and honest "regular guy" perspective on everyday weirdness we can all relate to. Love the story about the lady who thought he was chasing her! Of course, the most unforgettable part of John's routine is his big finish, "Salt and Pepper Diner", the tale of the best meal he ever had. It's not what you think. It's actually the story of one of the greatest pranks ever pulled, with the help of Tom Jones' "What's New, Pussycat?". Definitely one of the funniest standup routines I've heard in a while.

HILARIOUS!!!! Jul 17, 2009

"Da Fizzle Shizzle, Dizzle"
Mulaney's "Top Part" is definately one of the best stand-up CD's to come out of Comedy Central in a while. The entire CD is great, but I challenge anyone out there to get through the "Salt & Pepper" skit without absolutely crying by the time it's over. I haven't laughed this hard since Dane Cook's 1st release. The only bummer about this package is the lack of DVD. I'd hoped that this would've included the Comedy Central "Presents" episode as well. Oh well, as good as this is I'd pay a 2nd time for it. Hands down, no doubt about it, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Good, Classic Work Jul 01, 2009
By E. A. Montgomery I didn't expect much from John Mulaney. I'm not a fan of Conan O'Brien and Best Week Ever is pretty hit or miss for me. The Top Part is much funnier than the comedian's employers. While nothing on the disc made me laugh until I cried, I couldn't turn it off. I usually listen to bits and pieces of comedy cd's but this one held my attention from beginning to end, leaving me behind schedule. Whether he's talking about Scarface fans or certain transsexual's version of femininity, John Mulaney is engaging and arch. His comedy is light on the profanity, pretty much vulgarity free, and he's still hilarious. It's an observational comedy - "Pirates never bring big enough chests... I think maybe, with the eye patches, they have poor depth perception." The jokes are as likely to be on himself, his own error or his own lack of understanding, as someone else's. Mulaney has great delivery, excellent pacing, and a good voice. I'd certainly seek his work out from now on.

I laughed my rear-end off. Really couldn't ask for more. Jun 26, 2009
By RMurray847 I think the best sign that this was some funny stuff was that fact that after the CD was over, I wanted MORE. I was really enjoying myself.
John Mulaney, whom I had NEVER heard of before listening to this CD, does "observational humor." That's pretty much what all stand-ups do these days, so the key to sucess is in the delivery AND in the observations they make. Mulaney's delivery is friendly and a bit slow (which is funny) and never cruel (which is nice). His bits are ALMOST family friendly...except that he throws in a bunch of f-bombs and such. Not to the point where they are a weapon of comedy themselves (like Richard Pryor, to go for a creaky old example), but just conversationally. So in the end, I wouldn't listen to this with my kids. But that aside, it was refreshing that most of the material was actually NOT offensive. No overt sexuality. He truly did find humor in mundane observations and in recollections about his own past. (Apparently, Mulaney grappled with alcohol addiction at an early age.)
He does a truly hilarious bit about LAW AND ORDER. I watch the show a lot, and I was rolling at some of his spot on observations. This seques into a bit about Jerry Orbach (whom he is respectful of) and then turns into a riff on an idea of a movie featuring the two people who received Orbach's donated eyes after his death. Sounds creepy, but it's actually very funny, and again, not mean-spirited.
He talks about a few subjects that EVERY stand-up always talks about, such as air travel...and these are the least inspired bits. But there are no routines that he does which are not funny. Some are just better than others. Whether talking about his role as a benchwarmer, his thoughts on King Solomon's wisdom or his version of a $100 million dollar blockbuster...he is engaging, amiable and smart. Very few cheap jokes.
I'd like to hear more, and I'd like to see him sometime. I think that's a pretty good recommendation. If you can, take a listen and I think you'll find plenty to laugh at. I was certainly most thoroughly entertained!
