Denis Leary is a very funny man and his new book, Suck On This Year, shows just how funny. It is full of tweets - short bon mots at 140 characters or less - that take a headline and continue it with very funny lines. Example:
Doctors: attention deficit disorder can destroy a marriage.
(Denis Leary): I think I speak for all husbands when I say: 'You seen my keys?'
This little book is chock full of classic Denis Leary humour - sarcastic wit amid true observations that only he could think of. To see more examples of his twitter humour, you can follow him on his twitter page. One of his latest tweets:
TSA conducting groin checks. Sen. Larry Craig's been thru 19 times already.
Suck On This Year would make a great holiday gift for a Denis Leary fan. A portion of the proceeds from sales go to the Leary Firefighters Foundation.

After watching "The Job" and a season of "Rescue Me" (two really good TV shows) and hearing " Why We Suck" on audio cd and enjoying it, I decided to go to one of his book signings for this book ( Harcover Pamphlet? ) and was surprised how friendly and funny he was with his fans. I read the book while I was in line and it did make me laugh, as I noticed others where doing the same.

This has been the year of "one-liner" books. Denis adds his to the mix late in the year probably because this is the perfect stocking stuffer for your anal retentive friends. The book is small, red, and funny as hell. Kind of like Gary Coleman wearing a Santa suit eating at Jack-in-the-Box. (too soon)? For me, a writer shows their skill when they write a story. They show their TALENT when they write a short story. Denis shows off his talent with these fast, biting, mean-but-well-deserved 140-character (or less) one liners.

Suck on this BOOK. What a disappointment...I've enjoyed Leary's interviews on various shows, and find him to be clever with a very funny take on things. This book consists of a collection of "tweets" - one per page - that left me really wanting for something amusing. YAWN. Save your money.

I like Dennis Leary as both an actor and comedian . . . as for his writing, if SUCK ON THIS YEAR (Viking Adult) is any indication, I would strongly suggest that he stick to his other careers.
This book, if you can call it that, is a very short collection of his Tweets with some accompanying photos . . . I found very few of them funny.
In fact, on second thought, I only found this one mildly amusing: Scientists discover traces of water on asteroid. Call me when they find scotch.
Perhaps the only redeeming part of the book can be found in its introduction: A portion of the proceeds from this glorified pamphlet with pictures will go towards my charity--The Leary Firefighters Foundation. So not only are you probably improving your own life by buying this and reading it (which should only take about 20 minutes) and hopefully laughing out loud--you are also helping a firefighter somewhere in America gain some invaluable training in a new or improved facility or placing a needed piece of equipment into his or her hands.
My thinking is that if you'd like to support firefighters, just make a contribution directly to the aforementioned Foundation . . . . or to some other organization that supports the work that these brave men and women do . . . save your money and don't buy SUCK ON THIS YEAR unless you're a big fan of the author--or related to him in some fashion.
